Ductless Mini Splits

What Is a Ductless Mini Split?

There are two main components to a ductless mini split system that can heat and cool your home: outdoor and indoor units. The indoor air handling unit distributes heated or cooled air within the home, and an outdoor unit holds the compressor and condenser.

Ductless mini split systems use indoor units that are either mounted within the ceiling or are wall-mounted close to ceiling height. Each indoor unit will blow hot or cool air into individual rooms. There is one outdoor unit, but multiple indoor units can be installed throughout the home or business, and each is controlled independently from the others. The outdoor and indoor units are connected through a power cable, tubing, and a drain line.

A ductless mini split system doesn’t need ductwork to cool or heat your home, as other types of heating systems and cooling systems require. The air within the home or business is circulated by the ductless mini split system and does not need to be pushed to other rooms through ductwork.

With a typical heating and cooling system, the temperature control in each room is not as precise. Ductwork is needed to push hot or cold air throughout your home, and traditional HVAC systems are more complicated than ductless mini split systems.

Benefits of Ductless Mini Split Systems

No Need for Ductwork

One of the biggest benefits of a ductless mini split heat pump system is that there is no need for installing distribution ductwork, unlike with central forced air systems. It is expensive to install ductwork, and you might not have the room needed to install it without the ductwork being visible. As a result, ductless systems typically have lower installation costs compared to heating or air conditioning systems that require new ductwork.

Zero Energy Losses

Ductless systems offer great energy efficiency and experience zero energy losses due to duct leaks, as traditional heating and air conditioning systems commonly suffer. With no energy lost because of a system that isn’t efficient, you will save money on energy bills to keep your home comfortable throughout the year. Ductless mini splits are more environmentally friendly, making it easy to cool and heat your home without wasting energy consumption.

No Major Renovations

Renovations can be extensive when you are trying to use traditional furnaces, boilers, or central air cooling systems to heat and cool your home. Ductless mini split systems don’t require any renovations for ductwork installation, and indoor units are easily installed on the wall or ceiling within the home.

Zoned Heating and Cooling

With a variety of zones throughout your home and a number of comfort needs, you have precise temperature control over the zoned heating and cooling in your space with a ductless mini split system. It’s easier to customize the temperature in individual rooms and shut off areas within your home that don’t need heating or cooling.

Versatile Applications

Ductless mini splits offer remarkable versatility, making them an ideal solution for various applications. Multi-zone systems can efficiently heat and cool entire homes, providing zoned comfort without the need for extensive ductwork.

On the other hand, a single-zone system is perfect for targeted comfort, making them an excellent choice for rooms that need supplemental heating and cooling or areas not connected to central systems. This way, you don’t have to rely on traditional window units or space heaters for comfort.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

Your indoor air quality can be vastly improved when you have an energy efficient, clean way to heat and cool the square footage of your home. Ductless mini splits help to give the quality indoor air you need to stay healthy. With the continual circulation of air from inside to outside, you get fresh air consistently when the system is on.

Provide Heating and Cooling

You don’t have to install two separate furnace and air conditioner when you want to have heating and air conditioning in your home. Ductless mini split heat pumps can be used to heat your home and as a cooling solution, a convenience for homeowners with a range of needs throughout the space in addition to energy savings.

How to Know if You Need Ductless Mini Split Repair

If you notice any of the signs below with your ductless mini splits, it’s time to call us for repair.

Your indoor unit has decreased airflow

When the airflow from your indoor units is low, it won’t be able to heat or cool your home correctly. The problem could be with a blower, or with the outdoor unit.

Your mini split unit smells strange

Strange odors coming from your mini split can indicate a problem with the electrical system, or something has gotten into your air filtration system.

Your current unit is releasing warmer air

When your ductless mini split indoor unit is releasing warm air instead of cool, the refrigerant may be low. You might also need to have a new thermostat installed instead of a new mini split unit.

Your energy bills are climbing

If you discover that your energy bills climbing quickly, you may have a problem with the system. When your system has to work hard to keep your home cool or warm, it experiences excess energy consumption and is no longer able to offer energy efficient performance.

Your mini split is loud and making strange noises

Once your system operates loudly or is making odd noises, your mini split needs to be inspected to see if it can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.
